How do uncertain times affect design processes?

A growing number of reflections and design strategies concerning the transformation of public space is more and more in dialogue with uncertainty by noticing, staying with, and harnessing it, making room for the unexpected, testing through prototypes, developing open processes, paying attention to the ephemeral and the unfinished.

This seminar gathers researchers and practitioners involved in some of these new approaches across Europe. Which are the specificities of these experiences of investigation and practice? Is there a common ground between them? Can we find clues to a timely mindset? These are the main questions that will trigger and orientate the discussion.

Il 23 novembre prossimo aprirà la mostra organizzata nell’ambito delle iniziative di celebrazione dei novant’anni dell’Istituto Nazionale di Urbanistica, al museo MAXXI di Roma, nello spazio Corner. L’evento di inaugurazione sarà trasmesso in diretta Facebook sulla pagina dell’INU.

"La scelta di non aspettare il compimento del primo secolo di vita del nostro Istituto - spiega Michele Talia, presidente dell'INU - non è stata dettata dall'impazienza dei suoi dirigenti, ma dalla volontà di contribuire ad un ulteriore consolidamento del prestigio e della autorevolezza dell'urbanistica italiana in una fase in cui il Piano Nazionale di Ripresa e Resilienza (PNRR) si appresta ad avviare una radicale trasformazione del Paese, e senza coinvolgere adeguatamente in questa complessa transizione i grandi temi del governo del territorio".

La mostra si terrà presso lo Spazio Corner del MAXXI, e sarà visitabile fino al 19 dicembre. Sarà accompagnata da un ciclo di iniziative di approfondimento che culminerà il 16 dicembre con il convegno di chiusura. Per maggiori informazioni riguardo il ciclo di eventi, visitare la pagina dedicata.

“Il numero che presentiamo (settembre 2021) – dichiara il Responsabile scientifico Gabriele Pasqui - è il primo di una serie, immaginata come un palinsesto aperto. Ci piacerebbe che in futuro il Giornale potesse ospitare temi e contributi diversi, a seconda degli sviluppi del progetto Territori Fragili, e offrire uno spazio di confronto per una rete ampia di interlocutori che avranno interesse a partecipare e a mettersi in rete con noi, aprire insomma una nuova fase collaborativa nella produzione di conoscenza attorno a questo tema”.

The final plenary of DESIGNSCAPES UN-Conference is entitled “Design, Technical Action & Sustainability”, hosting prof. Andrew Feenberg as keynote speaker.

Prof. Feenberg will present the foundations of his instrumentalization theory, which was originally proposed – about 20 years ago – for the analysis of design in terms of a dual nature of functionality, being at the same time technologically driven and culturally shaped. DESIGNSCAPES owns a lot to this intuition, which goes beyond constructivism in so far as it gives explicit recognition of the crucial importance of people’s engagement within the process of sense making that design attributes to technology. Quite interestingly, as the author states in his latest book, the theory of instrumentalization adds an element of contingency to the process, implying multiple “right” answers to technical questions, depending on who is asked what – that is, on the particular interests and beliefs that shape the answers. This does not only add a communitarian dimension to design, it also suggests a new and somehow unexpected role for public policy, namely to recognize the importance of social struggle and political agency in sociotechnical development and to reconnect the causal determinations of technical systems to culturally specific notions of well-being as perceived by the general public. It therefore opens the technical sphere of innovation to the uncertain if not controversial judgments we normally associate with politics.

“Progetti di Città” è la Masterclass progettuale organizzata dal laboratorio INU Giovani e dall’Istituto Nazionale di Urbanistica (INU) con il patrocinio e la collaborazione del Comune di Colleferro. È incentrata sul tema dei progetti urbanistici per la nuova stagione urbana del centro della Città metropolitana di Roma. Vi possono partecipare (la scadenza per l’iscrizione è il 31 agosto 2021) studenti delle lauree magistrali in Progettazione Urbana o ambiti inerenti, studenti del quarto e quinto anno delle lauree a ciclo unico, laureandi, dottorandi, dottorati, ricercatori e giovani professionisti under 35. Le attività si svolgono dal 13 al 25 settembre 2021, in modalità mista: la prima fase in remoto e la seconda in presenza a Colleferro.

L'iniziativa è patrocinata anche dagli Ordini degli architetti e degli ingegneri della provincia di Roma e dal Dipartimento di Architettura dell'Università degli Studi Roma Tre.

La Masterclass si concentrerà su due ambiti, il centro storico e le aree industriali in disuso. Il lavoro e i suggerimenti progettuali dei partecipanti costituiranno spunti per il percorso di rigenerazione intrapreso dall’amministrazione. I risultati saranno inoltre pubblicati sul sito web dell’INU, sulla rivista Urbanistica Informazioni e costituiranno l’ossatura di una mostra che sarà organizzata a Colleferro. Inoltre per i partecipanti ci sarà anche la possibilità di presentare domanda al bando “Città accessibili a tutti, premio per tesi di laurea magistrale e ricerche - studi 2021”.

MODALITÀ DI PARTECIPAZIONE
Alla masterclass possono partecipare studenti delle lauree magistrali in Progettazione Urbana o ambiti inerenti, studenti del quarto e del quinto anno delle lauree a ciclo unico, laureandi, dottorandi, dottorati, ricercatori e giovani professionisti under 35. L'iscrizione dovrà avvenire in forma singola. Il numero massimo di ammessi alla masterclass sarà di 40 partecipanti (fino ad esaurimento posti).

La transizione socio-ecologica. Il contributo delle ricerche di dottorato
alla definizione di soluzioni innovative

Il Convegno UPhD GREEN si colloca nella cornice di Urbanpromo Green, come spazio dedicato alle ricerche condotte nell’ambito dei dottorati che affrontano il tema dello sviluppo sostenibile, con riferimento alla pianificazione urbanistica e territoriale, alla progettazione urbana e architettonica, alla valutazione di politiche, piani e progetti riguardanti il territorio e le città.

Questa edizione di Urbanpromo PhD Green prevede due fasi distinte. La prima, riguarda il convegno durante il quale le/i dottorande/i e le/i neo dottoresse/i di ricerca selezionati saranno invitati a presentare il loro lavoro attraverso 20 slides. Le presentazioni permetteranno di mettere in evidenza idee e risultati delle ricerche, stimolando la discussione tra dottorande/i afferenti a diversi atenei italiani. La seconda fase riguarda la potenziale pubblicazione dei contributi più innovativi presentati durante il convegno all’interno di una special issue della rivista internazionale Urban Planning and Design (ICE Publishing) che sarà dedicata ai temi del convegno. Le/i partecipanti al convegno UPhD Green 2021, infatti, saranno invitate/i a scrivere un paper, che verrà valutato secondo le procedure della rivista (https://www.icevirtuallibrary.com/toc/jurdp/current).

International Conference for PhD Students on Urban Studies

City+2021 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
City+, an urban studies research network led by early career researchers, is organizing annual international conferences for early career researchers and PhD students on urban studies. The first event, City+ 2017 @ Cambridge, was launched at University of Cambridge, followed by City+ 2018 @ London at University College London and City+ 2019 @ Delft at Delft University of Technology. To date, our conferences have attracted approximately 260 delegates coming from a number of universities and organizations and from Asia, Europe and North America, demonstrating the conference’s potential to become a good platform to share research experiences, provide cooperation opportunities and address increasingly complex urban concerns from multiple perspectives.

This year City+ 2021 @ Milan will be held on October 30 at Polytechnic University of Milan. The Conference is held by the Department of Architecture and Urban Studies (DAStU), by the organizers with diverse backgrounds from its three Ph.D. Programs: Urban Planning, Design and Policy (UPDP), Preservation of the Architectural Heritage (PAH), and Architectural, Urban and Interior Design (AUID). Serving as a platform, City+ 2021 @ Milan is expected to facilitate young researchers to work closely at the forefront of urban studies through disseminating their research, receiving valuable feedbacks, expanding academic networks and boosting potential cooperation.

Within the theme “Modeling a Resilient and Smart Urban Life”, this conference aims to demonstrate the different aspects of modeling in urban studies.

THE PhD PROGRAMME
The PhD Programme in Urban Planning, Design and Policy was initiated in 2013 through the merging of two earlier programmes both based in the Department of Architecture and Urban Studies. This is one of the most important departments in Italy in the field of urban studies, integrated into a strong international network of academic institutions. As one of 180 departments selected and financed by the Italian Ministry of Education, Universities and Research for the "Departments of Excellence" initiative, the Department of Architecture and Urban Studies in the five-year period 2018-2022 will focus its efforts on the issue of territorial fragility. The PhD programme in Urban Planning, Design and Policy benefits from this rich research environment and aims at training young researchers in the field of urban studies according to the best international standards.

MISSION AND GOALS
The PhD Programme in Urban Planning, Design and Policy aims at exploring the significance and impact of contemporary urban changes and understanding the way these changes can be governed through planning, design, and policy-making activities. The programme pays specific attention to recent spatial, environmental, social, and economic dynamics taking place in urban contexts, as well as to pro-active advancements in planning practices and to potential innovations in traditional urban studies, urban design, and policymaking. Based on a multidisciplinary approach, the main objective of both the educational programme and the individual research training is to offer PhD candidates a challenging environment with space for international debate, research, experimentation, and innovation.
The main courses and workshops are focused on the following areas:

• Urban changes. Contemporary cities are worldwide confronted with increasing challenges regarding social inequality, local democracy, environmental, social and economic sustainability, and cultural diversity. The main issues addressed are: social, economic, environmental, and territorial transformations; technological change that cities are facing; social and political innovation strategies.
• Planning theories and practices. Different planning fields and cultures are explored through a critical and comparative approach. The main issues addressed are: paradigms, traditions, and innovations in planning theory; land use planning and its relationship with citizenship and justice; comparative studies about planning systems; the relationship between planning theory and practice; visioning and the strategic dimension in plans, policies, and projects.
• Design topics, forms, and tools. Theoretical and technical issues for the construction of urban projects and the implementation of public policies are addressed through specific research themes. The main themes addressed are: the role and form of urban projects in driving territorial change; innovations in the descriptions and representations of cities and landscapes; evaluation and management of urban projects to balance the financial feasibility of land development with land protection, biodiversity, and energy saving.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
According to its international orientation, the programme intends to train highly qualified researchers and professionals. They are all expected to work worldwide in academic institutions, research centres, public administrations, and the private sector in the following fields: spatial planning; design and management of urban and landscape projects; urban policies, and urban studies.

The PhD programme grants 5 PhD positions (4 fully paid) to start in November 2021.
The 4 scholarships are organised as follows:

• Spatial planning in a green deal perspective for human well-being, tourism and the sustainability of the contemporary cities and landscapes
• Towards a context-sensitive post-car transition. Policies and project to support equity and sustainable mobility
• New structures of spatial and socio-economic inequalities, local welfare policies and labour market, new working spaces, social inclusion and spatial regeneration: social justice, social cohesion, redistribution, social investment, sustainability, transformations in the labour market and space implications
• Ageing in different urban/rural contexts, between autonomy and support: housing, care, accessibility, mobility and social relation
• Beyond city-ism and metropolitan-ism: new spatial imaginaries, emerging forms of agencies and the necessity of interrelated and trans-scalar approaches to governance problems in large urban regions.

Fare urbanistica oggi: le culture del progetto.
Declinazioni, opportunità, criticità

Il Seminario intende avviare un confronto sull’urbanistica in Italia e sull’idea del progetto che cambia, sensibile ai temi che attraversano la condizione contemporanea, con specifico riferimento alle culture, alle pratiche, all’insegnamento e alla ricerca.

L’assunto di partenza è un’idea ampia e multidimensionale di progetto come attitudine a prefigurare visioni di futuro, come sguardo esplorativo ed interpretativo che produce conoscenza, come sistema di azioni tecnicamente pertinenti, come campo di interazione sociale e di conflitto, come capacità di elaborazione di strumenti multiscalari e integrati di pianificazione del territorio e della città. Un’idea costantemente riferita allo spazio fisico e sociale della città, alle esplorazioni possibili del campo del visibile, alle sensibilità per le morfologie urbane e territoriali, per i paesaggi, per i territori palinsesto. Un’idea di progetto, dunque, in grado di recuperare una tradizione culturale italiana ricca di senso per mettere sistematicamente in tensione spazio e società, con specifica attenzione ai contesti culturali e materiali intesi come riflesso della società, delle economie, delle istituzioni.

I temi, le questioni, i fenomeni che attraversano la società e il territorio contemporaneo mutano la concezione e i modi di prefigurazione del futuro, di organizzazione dello spazio fisico della città, di indirizzo delle politiche e dei comportamenti. Il progetto come dispositivo visionario degli assetti spaziali e urbani oggi assume caratteri e forme molteplici che vanno oltre gli strumenti e i dispositivi su cui – per decenni – si è concentrata e confrontata la cultura urbanistica, in particolare nel contesto italiano. Oltre il piano regolatore generale, ormai declinato in forma diversa nei quadri legislativi regionali, la città si progetta a scale differenti e con azioni, strategie e progetti plurali, incentrati su molteplici geografie dell’azione urbanistica: dallo spazio pubblico alle reti infrastrutturali ed ecologiche, dalle aree interne ai territori del periurbano, dalla città storica alle vecchie e nuove periferie, dalla rigenerazione diffusa al masterplan per le grandi aree di trasformazione ancora in attesa, in forme che chiedono di ripensare radicalmente l’efficacia dell’azione urbanistica e del nostro fare.

L'iniziativa si propone l'apertura di un dialogo sui modi, le forme e gli sfondi culturali su cui vengono sviluppati la ricerca e l’insegnamento del progetto urbanistico contemporaneo, innescando, a partire dalla rete SIU, un confronto ampio e sistematico tra sedi, scuole, gruppi di lavoro e di ricerca che concentrano il loro lavoro sulla ricerca progettuale.

Given the vastness of the theme and the aim of the seminar, which is to present the architectural culture, addresses and issues of the heritage of the Baltic countries in a short time, the seminar will take place over six days organized by macro-themes to encourage interdisciplinary reflection. Given the smallness and fragmentation of the research conducted so far at the national level (normally limited to only one of the countries or to a single aspect of the built environment, such as infrastructures, etc.) and in order to present the topic most exhaustively, speakers belonging to different disciplinary sectors will participate to the seminar to discuss the main topics and prove useful tools to designers and researchers.

The focus of the seminar is the confrontation and dialectical exchange between the scholars of Sapienza and some of the protagonists of the contemporary cultural scene of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia to make themes and perspectives known to a wider sector of the scientific community and, at the same time, intensify cultural relations. The seminar is divided into six complementary “short conversations”, dedicated to the architecture, cities and historical heritage that together make up the landscape of the three Baltic Republics.

The Urban Design Studies Unit at the Department of Architecture, University of Strathclyde is honoured to host the 28th International Seminar of Urban Form (ISUF2021) conference in Glasgow, UK. The conference addresses the role of urban morphology in delivering sustainable and prosperous cities, in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and, in particular, SDG 11 “Sustainable Cities and Communities”.
This conference aims to address:
1) the state of the art in the study and understanding of urban form;
2) the current and future challenges that call urban form into play;
3) the relationship between urban morphology and other areas of science, and how to bridge gaps in interdisciplinary research.

We will also discuss a number of key topics that reflect latest concerns and innovations in the discourse on cities at an international level.

LA NUOVA EPOCA DELLA CITTÀ

Nel 1978, il 18% della popolazione cinese abitava nelle aree urbane. Da allora, gli abitanti delle città sono aumentati al ritmo di circa l’1% all’anno e sono attualmente il 60% del totale della popolazione. Nuove infrastrutture e nuovi insediamenti hanno progressivamente cambiato il paesaggio, trasformando i diritti di proprietà, travolgendo i confini amministrativi, “mangiando” gli spazi rurali e i villaggi. Davanti ai nostri occhi scorre il veloce e dirompente procedi urbanizzazione cinese. Capirlo non è semplice. Le categorie e i modelli che abbiamo a disposizione non servono. Ridurrel’urbanizzazione cinese all’esagerazione e al difetto porta a nascondere un cambiamento epocale che ridefinisce ruoli e relazioni, non solo dal punto di vista geoeconomico e geopolitico, ma anche dal punto di vista culturale, dell’immaginazione e delle possibilità. Un cambiamento reso ancora più acuto da questi tempi incerti, segnati dalla pandemia.

China Goes Urban propone di cambiare punto di vista, di guardare alla realtà più che inserirla in categorie e modelli prestabiliti. È un invito a ritornare a esplorare il mondo, un viaggio nella città e nell’architettura del presente e del futuro e intorno al concetto di città: un concetto apparentemente semplice, che tutti pensiamo di conoscere e di capire, ma che si frantuma nella molteplicità che caratterizza l’urbano del nostro tempo. Tongzhou, Zhaoqing, Zhengdong e Lanzhou sono le new town che la mostra invita ad esplorare.

DUE PERCORSI LOGICI

La mostra si snoda lungo due percorsi logici.
Il primo percorso conduce a decostruire progressivamente l’idea dell’eccezionalità dell’urbanizzazione cinese. Il visitatore è infatti “accolto” in un exhibition hall, uno dei “materiali urbani” che connotano la specificità dei nuovi insediamenti in Cina in cui i developer e le amministrazioni pubbliche “mettono in scena” la città con l’obiettivo di promuovere i nuovi insediamenti sul mercato o mostrare il contributo delle amministrazioni locali al raggiungimento degli obiettivi del governo centrale, siano essi l’aumento del PIL, l’educazione al vivere urbano della popolazione che dalle campagne si sposta in città o il perseguimento di stili di vita “moderni” della classe media emergente. Questo punto di partenza permette di rassicurare i visitatori che ritrovano nella prima sala la diversità e l’esotismo normalmente associati alla città cinese. Una rassicurazione che viene poi via via smontata attraverso video e immagini, installazioni e spiegazioni che rendono le nuove urbanizzazioni cinesi più “vicine” perché conoscibili. La vita nei nuovi insediamenti è infatti una vita quotidiana, ordinaria, fatta di piccoli gesti e movimenti (andare in bicicletta, mangiare, lavorare, camminare...) in cui tutti, in ogni parte del mondo, siamo impegnati.

Al contempo, il primo percorso permette al visitatore di comprendere i cambiamenti di scala coinvolti nel “fare città”: dal singolo “materiale urbano” ci si sposta verso l’insieme dei frammenti che compongono le new town cinesi, passando per quegli spazi ibridi che non sono ancora città e non sono più campagna, per poi allargarsi ancora alla rete delle relazioni, dei flussi, degli scambi che abbracciano tutto il mondo. In questo modo, i processi di urbanizzazione in Cina entrano a far parte di quel modello di sviluppo economico e urbano che si è affermato nel corso dei secoli e che presenta limiti e contraddizioni particolarmente evidenti nell’attuale fase di incertezza dovuta all’emergenza sanitaria e alle conseguenze in ambito economico e sociale.

Il secondo percorso logico è concettualmente inverso. Il primo impatto è in questo caso spaesante: gli spazi mostrati all’inizio sono vuoti, lontani, senza vita. Progressivamente, però, gli stessi spazi si animano: le fotografie e i video avvicinano i visitatori alle persone, ai volti, ai gesti e ai movimenti. Che sono i nostri volti e i nostri movimenti.

In all its multiple meanings the word heritage refers to what we inherit from the past, both in material and immaterial sense. Some authors speak about heritage as a sense of past, meant as a form of past self-awareness, as a collective experience and as an essential dimension of a culture. Some other authors believe that the idea of heritage deals with the ability to put the contemporary human signs into an historical perspective, so developing a sense of place, that is the place’s value and meaning.

Therefore, heritage can be intended as sense of past and sense of place together. The heritage’s existence itself lies in the ability to read/interpret the sense of belonging of something inherited from the past to a specific place, as well as in the shared need to preserve and deliver it to future generations.

In order to share knowledge and produce new research questions, the conference is addressed to figures involved in:

• universities and research institutes operating in the architectural design field

THE PROGRAMME
The MS. in Architecture, Urban and Regional Design at New York Institute of Technology School of Architecture and Design is a program at the forefront of urban design research focused on issues of urbanization through the exploration of social, environmental, and technological domains. Located in the heart of Midtown Manhattan, MS.AURD students gain a global perspective on urbanism through the study of iconic New York City and diverse urban metropolitan regions around the world. Through three Advanced Urban Design studios, history and theory courses, seminars, and research projects students learn how to be an agent of change by responding to critical issues within the global context of 21st-century urbanism. The MS.AURD is a 3-semester Program, and it is also a designated STEM program, making its international graduates eligible for a 24-month extension to the Optional Practical Training (OPT) to work in the United States.

The seminar represents a moment of discussion and knowledge sharing about the issue of modification of office districts and service workspaces. Even before the effects caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the request of reconfigurations of office districts and buildings was a tangible reality in various European contexts, driven by diverse reasons: the vacancy created by a surplus of realizations by the real estate markets; the request of better quality and comfort; a multiplicity of services workplaces' geographies; changes in lifestyle and labour practices. Some of these conditions have been moreover dramatically affected by the current COVID-19 pandemic. Considering both realized projects and ongoing researches, the seminar intends to reflect on strategies, design tools and processes for the reconfiguration of office districts, with particular attention to urban scale, role, and issues of urban regeneration: soil design, in-between public space structure, presence of temporary and mixed activities, flexibility and greenery.
In this framework, complex projects of regeneration are presented in the opening and final sessions; current trends and projects in Milan are part of the second session; cutting-edge experiences are illustrated in the third section. Aim of the seminar is to focus on design trajectories and processes to reimage the office-directional workspaces as more able to absorb urban modifications and practices and to interpret new challenges of sustainability.

In questo periodo di incertezza e novità, BASE si ripropone ancora una volta come luogo di sperimentazione del vivere quotidiano.
BASE, Hub di rigenerazione urbana, co-progettazione e innovazione nelle industrie creative, lancia alle università italiane e in particolar modo alle nuove generazioni una nuova sfida per ripensare attraverso il design la nostra quotidianità alla luce di questi tempi del tutto inediti:

A partire da questo presente e con la volontà di costruire un nuovo futuro, BASE guarda già al prossimo Fuorisalone scegliendo di indagare le tematiche più attuali scaturite da questo particolare momento storico abbracciando un concetto di design antropologico, dalla costruzione identitaria ai comportamenti sociali. E lo fa attraverso lo sguardo delle giovani generazioni e delle principali istituzioni formative nazionali e internazionali che le rappresentano. Come? Chiamando a raccolta università, accademie, luoghi di formazione non convenzionale che abbiano voglia di mettersi in gioco per cercare soluzioni innovative in risposta all’attuale e inevitabile fase di ripensamento globale.

Per questo BASE ha scelto di lanciare una chiamata a raccolta per università e mondo della formazione allargato: in occasione della Design week 2021, BASE selezionerà e accoglierà esperienze di formazione, ricerca e sperimentazione dell’alta formazione nazionale e internazionale.

Consolidando l’esperienza iniziata nel 2019 insieme a Ventura Future che aveva visto l’ex Ansaldo popolarsi con i progetti delle migliori scuole e designer emergenti provenienti da tutto il mondo, BASE diventa ancora una volta il luogo che accoglie ricerca e sperimentazione, attraverso una progettualità che va al di là della settimana della Design Week ma soprattutto con discipline che vanno oltre il design.

X e XVII Edizione di Urbanpromo
SOCIAL HOUSING E PROGETTI PER IL PAESE

Si svolgeranno il 17 e 18 novembre e dal 17 al 20 novembre Urbanpromo Social Housing e Urbanpromo Progetti per il Paese, eventi nazionali di riferimento per l'abitare sociale e la rigenerazione urbana, organizzati dall'Istituto Nazionale di Urbanistica e da Urbit. Urbanpromo Progetti per il Paese e Urbanpromo Social Housing sono promossi insieme con Fondazione Cariplo, Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo e Fondazione Sviluppo e Crescita CRT. Partecipano alla realizzazione delle manifestazioni CDP Investimenti SGR, Fondazione Housing Sociale e Fondazione CRC. Si svolgeranno online, nel rispetto delle normative vigenti per il contenimento della diffusione del Covid-19. La partecipazione è gratuita, e può avvenire attraverso due modalità (informazioni dettagliate per l'iscrizione nella sezione apposita su www.urbanpromo.it): in diretta Zoom nella piattaforma di Urbanpromo e in diretta streaming sul sito di Urbanpromo, che a partire dai giorni degli eventi ospiterà e renderà disponibili per la consultazione, nell'apposita gallery online, i progetti che prendono parte alla manifestazione.

I giorni dedicati ad Urbanpromo Social Housing riguarderanno nella prima giornata le infrastrutture sociali e l'accesso ai finanziamenti europei (curato dal gruppo dei promotori) e i cambiamenti e le prospettive del settore alla luce della pandemia (Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo), mentre il 18 novembre sono in programma approfondimenti del modello britannico su rigenerazione urbana e sociale (Fondazione Sviluppo e Crescita CRT) e della cosiddetta "città dei quindici minuti", anche guardando alle principali esperienze straniere, a cura di Fondazione Housing Sociale in collaborazione con DESIS Network.

Urbanpromo Progetti per il Paese vedrà il 17 novembre incontri che riguarderanno le buone pratiche sulle opportunità offerte dai luoghi della cultura per la rigenerazione urbana, le strategie di sviluppo sostenibile per le aree montane (curato anche da Uncem), l'attività di pianificazione di Città metropolitane e Comuni, esperienze e orientamenti sulla mobilità attiva integrata (in collaborazione con Fiab - ComuniCiclabili), le innovazioni nella pianificazione nel focus sull'Emilia-Romagna.

Il 18 novembre, oltre a una sezione apposita per la presentazione di libri che proseguirà anche nella giornata successiva, sono in programma convegni sulla progettazione "green", sull'aggiornamento delle "Linee metodologiche per valorizzare i comprensori vitivinicoli di qualità nella disciplina territoriale ed urbanistica delle aree rurali" (Associazione Città del Vino) , sul rapporto pubblico - privato nella rigenerazione urbana (Arexpo), sul superamento delle diseguaglianze a favore delle componenti più fragili della popolazione.

Il 19 novembre i convegni saranno incentrati sulle opportunità e le esperienze riconducibili a una rigenerazione su base culturale (Fondazione Cariplo) e sulla presentazione di alcune importanti
progettualità di riqualificazione urbana. Si terranno inoltre la cerimonia di premiazione del "Premio Urbanistica" e del Premio per tesi di laurea magistrale e ricerche-studi "Città accessibili a tutti", il convegno scientifico internazionale "Le nuove comunità urbane e il valore strategico della conoscenza", un focus sulla rigenerazione urbana curato da CDP Investimenti SGR e uno sul rapporto tra territorio, cibo e città curato da Confcommercio - Imprese per l'Italia.

Nella giornata conclusiva in programma incontri sulla città digitale, le innovazioni per quanto riguarda la pianificazione portuale, progetti e prospettive per la pianificazione dei territori del Po, la ricostruzione del cratere sismico del 2016 (a cura del Commissario straordinario). Si terrà poi l'evento che rientra nelle celebrazioni del Novantennale dell'INU "Curando fragilità" e quello sul valore degli spazi nella rivoluzione digitale a cura di Siev. Ci sarà anche un convegno che discuterà gli esiti dell'attuazione della Convenzione Europea del Paesaggio a vent'anni dalla sua introduzione nel contesto europeo.

The Green Deal and the sustainability perspectives through which we look at cities and territories today highlight the complexity of the challenges that urban planning is facing. This complexity can be attributed to several factors.

Environmental challenges require us, on the one hand, to design responses to rapid and sudden events (such as the effects of climate change or pandemic events), increasing the quality of built and open spaces. On the other hand, they invite us to rethink the role of nature in the city through strategies that aim to increase urban resilience, improve the health of its inhabitants, guarantee food production, etc. Equally significant social challenges, moreover, urge us to rethink cities to make them accessible to all, especially socially vulnerable groups, allowing them to benefit from the services and resources of urban contexts.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All papers will be peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Nel 2020 l’INU celebra (e celebrerà anche nella prima metà del 2021 per le conseguenze della pandemia Covid-19) il suo Novantennale. Il primo dei tre eventi è “L’INU, le Istituzioni, la Politica” (i successivi saranno: “Curando fragilità”; “Regime dei suoli e degli immobili”). La scelta di iniziare questo percorso dall’esame del rapporto, costruito nel corso del tempo, con i rappresentanti delle istituzioni ai diversi livelli e con la politica, intende sottolineare il valore fondativo che l’INU ha costantemente attribuito alla cultura e alla pratica del governo della città e del territorio al servizio del Paese; una materia quest’ultima che è stata ed è tuttora soggetta a continue e appassionate ridefinizioni e nuove proposte di riforma. Alla Relazione introduttiva dell'INU seguiranno due dialoghi, con rilevanti testimoni delle istituzioni e della politica e con alcuni discussant. L'evento si terrà in streaming sul sito web e sulla pagina Facebook dell'INU.

RELAZIONI ESTESE

I comitati editoriali comunicheranno agli Autori selezionati, in conformità agli standard e formati della rivista interessata. La bozza dovrà essere trasmessa entro il 10 ottobre 2020 e gli Autori dei contributi accettati, revisionati dai referee, riceveranno gli esiti entro il 15 novembre 2020.
La stesura finale dell’articolo, eventualmente integrata in base alle osservazioni dei referee, dovrà essere consegnata entro il 05 dicembre 2020.

Gli Atti della XII Giornata di Studio verranno pubblicati su special issue della rivista scientifica INU Edizioni “Urbanistica Informazioni”. Una selezione di tre best paper sarà pubblicata sulla rivista Urbanistica.

La quota di iscrizione, da versare sul sito della conferenza contestualmente all’invio delle relazioni finali e delle tavole rotonde definitive, è di:

Un'agenda per i territori italiani dopo il Covid_19
Il contributo della Società Italiana degli Urbanisti
La terribile situazione che stiamo vivendo, e che ha determinato lo spostamento della Conferenza annuale della SIU al giugno del 2021, ci consegna una responsabilità rilevante. Come possiamo contribuire, da urbanisti che operano nelle università italiane, a definire un’agenda di ricerca, ma anche a proporre progetti, programmi e politiche, per il nostro Paese e per i nostri territori, sia nella fase di uscita dall’emergenza (che oggi non sappiamo ancora quanto sarà lunga e dolorosa), sia per il dopo COVID?

Non siamo oggi in grado di disegnare scenari accurati: è troppo presto. Tuttavia, possiamo mettere in campo le nostre competenze e intelligenze rivolgendole a una ragionevole comprensione del presente e a una cauta progettazione del futuro. Molte e molti di noi stanno già lavorando in questa direzione, mettendo in campo indagini, ricerche, progetti e programmi di lavoro che è importante socializzare. Come società scientifica, inoltre, dobbiamo avere l’ambizione di proporre un’agenda di temi anche al Paese, alle istituzioni, alla società civile, al mondo della ricerca e dell’Università. Un’agenda che sia in grado anche di contribuire a correggere limiti ed errori che appaiono sempre più evidenti nella gestione attuale dell’emergenza.

Il Seminario, che si svolgerà in rete, avrà alcuni obiettivi:
• costruire una piattaforma per la riflessione collettiva dei membri della nostra società scientifica;
• restituire una prima rappresentazione delle ricerche e delle riflessioni in atto e in fase di definizione;
• proporre un’agenda di temi e un numero limitato di proposte da lanciare alla nostra comunità e all’opinione pubblica.

Alla conclusione dei lavori, produrremo un documento sintetico ed efficace, da inviare al Governo, alle Regioni e ai media.

THE PhD PROGRAMME
The PhD Programme in Urban Planning, Design and Policy was initiated in 2013 through the merging of two earlier programmes both based in the Department of Architecture and Urban Studies. This is one of the most important departments in Italy in the field of urban studies, integrated in a strong international network of academic institutions. As one of 180 departments selected and financed by the Italian Ministry of Education, Universities and Research for the "Departments of Excellence" initiative, the Department of Architecture and Urban Studies in the five-year period 2018-2022 will focus its efforts on the issue of territorial fragility. The PhD programme in Urban Planning, Design and Policy benefits from this rich research environment and aims at training young researchers in the field of urban studies according to the best international standards. Over the last six years, twelve PhD candidates have graduated and five more are expected to do so in 2020.

MISSION AND GOALS
The PhD Programme in Urban Planning, Design and Policy aims at exploring the significance and impact of contemporary urban changes and understanding the way these changes can be governed through planning, design, and policy-making activities. The programme pays specific attention to recent spatial, environmental, social, and economic dynamics taking place in urban contexts, as well as to pro-active advancements in planning practices and to potential innovations in traditional urban studies, urban design, and policy making. Based on a multidisciplinary approach, the main objective of both the educational programme and the individual research training is to offer PhD candidates a challenging environment with space for international debate, research, experimentation, and innovation.
The main courses and workshops are focused on the following areas:

• Urban changes. Contemporary cities are worldwide confronted with increasing challenges regarding social inequality, local democracy, environmental, social and economic sustainability, and cultural diversity. The main issues addressed are: social, economic, environmental, and territorial transformations; technological change that cities are facing; social and political innovation strategies.
• Planning theories and practices. Different planning fields and cultures are explored through a critical and comparative approach. The main issues addressed are: paradigms, traditions, and innovations in planning theory; land use planning and its relationship with citizenship and justice; comparative studies about planning systems; the relationship between planning theory and practice; visioning and the strategic dimension in plans, policies, and projects.
• Design topics, forms, and tools. Theoretical and technical issues for the construction of urban projects and the implementation of public policies are addressed through specific research themes. The main themes addressed are: the role and form of urban projects in driving territorial change; innovations in the descriptions and representations of cities and landscapes; evaluation and management of urban projects to balance the financial feasibility of land development with land protection, biodiversity, and energy saving.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
According to its international orientation, the programme intends to train highly qualified researchers and professionals. They are all expected to work worldwide in academic institutions, research centres, public administrations, and the private sector in the following fields: spatial planning; design and management of urban and landscape projects; urban policies, and urban studies.

APPLICATIONS SUBMISSION
The PhD programme grants three scholarships financed by the Italian Ministry of University and Research. Applicants may freely submit a research proposal related to innovative topics of personal interest.

• Multiple institutional levels and land-use issues: the case of infrastructure.
• Coping with territorial fragility: challenges to planning theory and practices.
• Planning in the face of financialisation.
• After implementation: a retrospective research on policies and their effects.
• Architects, Engineers, Planners: how do the changing urban conditions require to redesign research and professional profiles?
• Mobility, Accessibility, and spatial inequalities. Understanding and managing the deep intertwining of urban mobilities and socio-spatial transformations.
• Climate change and urban resilience. Spatial planning and ecological perspective for human well-being and for the livability of the contemporary city.
• New structures of spatial and socio-economic inequalities, local welfare policies and labour market, new working spaces, social inclusion, and spatial regeneration: social justice, social cohesion, redistribution, social investment, sustainability, transformations in the labour market and space implications.
• Ageing in different urban/rural contexts, between autonomy and support: issues in housing, care, accessibility, mobility and social relations.
• Beyond city-ism and metropolitan-ism: new spatial imaginaries, emerging forms of agencies, and the necessity of interrelated and trans-scalar approaches to governance problems in large urban regions.

Applicants may also apply for five thematic scholarships, designed for students who wish to conduct research in specific subfields of urban studies:

1. More than social housing. Potentials and challenges in the innovation and re-actualization of the social housing sector.

LE NUOVE COMUNITÀ URBANE E IL VALORE STRATEGICO DELLA CONOSCENZA //
THE NEW URBAN COMMUNITIES AND THE STRATEGIC VALUE OF KNOWLEDGE

In re-proposing the formula already successfully tested in previous editions of Urbanpromo, INU and Urbit intend to provide working hypotheses and contributions of ideas to the scientific community by organizing an international conference that will take place in Milan on the occasion of the 17th edition of Urbanpromo in November 2020. The conference is addressed to researchers, scholars and professionals who work in universities, businesses and public administration, and makes use of the collaboration of the leading scientific journals in the sector URBANISTICA and Planum. The Journal of Urbanism. Planum will ensure the full and timely publication of the papers sent – which will be propagatedand subjected to discussion already during the Conference , while the URBANISTICA magazine – as already happened with n. 157, n. 160 and n. 162 (in press) of the magazine – will host a large selection of papers considered of greatest interest in a special issue.

CALL FOR PAPERS

Thanks to a clever mixture of scientific, technical-administrative and operational contents, urban planning traditionally occupies a changing space, endowed with a not negligible symbolic charge, even if of uncertain definition, which is perpetually looking for a satisfactory position among the territories of professional competence and those of democratic representation.

If, for a long time, the exercise of urban planning has based its legitimacy on a rather robust analytical corpus, fed by other social disciplines and by an increasingly deeper design experimentation, it is now evident that this flow of knowledge seems to have significantly weakened. At the origin of the short circuit that tends to settle between the planning proposals and their analytical basis, it is possible to identify a long series of critical issues, which prevent the plan process from appearing convincing and feasible. Among these, the following are particularly important:
A. the difficulty of developing interpretative models capable of measuring themselves with the growing complexity of settlement systems and their change;
B. the loss of visibility and responsibility of the urban planner in the new map of power that, at different scales, was recently designed by the local government;
C. the clear propensity of political parties and cultural elites to avoid the risks that the future holds for us and, consequently, to flatten uncritically on the present;
D. the tendency, at this point without alternatives, to appear unarmed having to manage a post-emergency phase, such as the reconstruction of a territory devastated by a seismic event, or the reorganization of a society destabilized by the consequences of a pandemic.

The thematic articulation of this Call is based precisely on the awareness that a new urban cycle is now upon us, and that urban planning is facing a double challenge, which if on the one hand requires to mobilize the intellectual resources available to analyze in-depth the radical changes that are taking place, or that will mature in the near future also following the recent health emergency, on the other hand require to insert the relationship between public policies and the plan design in a finally coherent and long-term framework.

Those who wish to present a written contribution is invited to send electronically an abstract in Italian or in English (min. 300 – max. 400 words) to the following email address before June 1st: call@urbit.it. The paper has to indicate the name of the author/s, the institution to which they belong and the reference to one or more topics proposed in the Call. Moreover, it must clearly propose the thesis supported and a concise overview of the arguments and supporting data.

Authors will be informed of the acceptance of the proposal no later than June 10th. Before September 30th they will be invited to send to the email address call@urbit.it the final text of the contribution in Italian or in English with a maximum of 20.000 characters (including spaces), as well as possible figures and tables. The layouts for Abstract and Paper’s editing will be available on Urbanpromo, INU and Planum websites and it is strictly necessary to follow these rules for the acceptance of the contribution to the Conference.

The papers of the participants who are up to date with the payments will be published on Planum Publisher before the beginning of the Conference.

PAPERS' SCIENTIFIC VALIDATION
In order to encourage a wide and qualified distribution of the most significant works sent to the organisers of the Conference, an Evaluation Committee composed of the members of the Scientific Committees and of the two magazines will be established. The Evaluation Committee will select no less than 10 papers that their authors will illustrate during the International Conference. Through the same anonymous evaluation, a wider range of contributions will be selected to be published in a special issue of the magazine URBANISTICA. The authors must compose the final version of their papers in a way that they are coherent with the indications of the Evaluation Committee, with the editorial rules and with the deadlines indicated by the magazine URBANISTICA.

REGISTRATION FEE
The presentation of a paper at the Conference and its publication are subject to the payment of a participation fee of 300 euros (250 for the INU members). The registration for the Conference entitles participants to attend all the conferences of the XVI edition of Urbanpromo, which will take place in Milan in November 2020. This fee is reduced to 250 euros (200 for INU members) if it is made before September 20th. In any case, the author is required to send the receipt (CRO) of the payment made before October 20th, otherwise the paper will be excluded from the Proceedings of the Conference.

Contemporary City Descriptions and Projects | Call For Visiting Professor

The Visiting professorship programme aims at strengthening the internationalization of the School of Architecture, Urban Planning and Construction Engineering and of the Department of Architecture and Urban Studies at Politecnico di Milano by welcoming a foreign scholar for a semester term. The visiting professor will be in charge of lecturing one full course at the School for the period of her/his visiting position, developing autonomous research activity at the Department of Architecture and Urban Studies, joining seminars and academic venues. The visiting professor will be in charge of lecturing the course Contemporary City: Descriptions and Projects.

The Course
Contemporary City: Descriptions and Projects is a course offered at the second semester to the students enrolled in the first year of the Master of Science in Urban Planning and Policy Design. The course will be taught in English, it equals 10 ECTS credits and consists in 8 hours of teaching per week, for a total of about 100 hours. It is scheduled in the spring semester (mid February 2021 – mid June 2021) and has an attendance of about 80 students. Two dates for final examinations of attending students shall be fixed in June-July 2021. The course aims at analysing and discussing core issues of contemporary urban planning and design with reference to a multi-scalar and interdisciplinary approach. The analysis of major changes in the European and/or non-European urban realm may consider a critical discussion of new urban landscapes and development patterns, the emergence of new city forms, the issues at stake in historical city centres, problems and dimensions of contemporary practices in the domain of planning and designing contemporary cities. A complex understanding of contemporary planning challenges shall be presented, considering the impact of regional, demographic and socio-economic changes on urban design, urban policy and programs. A critical reference to a set of international case studies will be very appreciated. The course is rewarded with a sum of 20.000€ (for taxes paid in Italy, please consider that the average income tax in Italy equals about 46%. Other arrangements may be verified).

The School
The Politecnico di Milano is one of the most outstanding Universities in Europe. Founded in 1863, it is the largest school of architecture, design and engineering in Italy. The Master of Science in Urban Planning and Policy Design is a renowned program which is taught in English since 2006 at the School of Architecture, Urban Planning and Construction Engineering. The School of Architecture, Urban Planning and Construction Engineering is ranked by the QS World University, Engineering and Technology 2020 as the 7th in the world. The proportion of international students is relevant and produces a stimulating environment both for teaching and learning. The MSc Programme is rooted in a polytechnic tradition, bridging urban design, regional studies and social sciences. The programme aims at developing a wide scientific and professional education in urban planning and policy making. The aim of the programme is to train professionals who can deal with the multiple and complex issues of the contemporary policy agenda of cities and regions. Students who graduated from the Master of Science Programme usually work for international organizations, local governments, research institutes, real estate companies, private offices. The courses are held at the central City Campus Leonardo in Milan. The Programme is currently directed by Prof. Bertrando Bonfantini. Qualified research staff and Phd students with significant international and professional experiences are involved in the tutorship and teaching activity.

Directed by Prof. Massimo Bricocoli, The Department of Architecture and Urban Studies is the second largest Department of Politecnico di Milano and the largest in the field of Architecture; furthermore it is also the main academic research centre in Italy for urban and spatial planning issues, enjoying in a well-established international network of centres of excellence.

The visiting professorship program is open to highly qualified foreign scholars in the discipline of urban planning and related fields (e.g., urban studies, architecture, urban design, geography). Applicants must be affiliated to an academic or research institution. In order to state an interest in participating, the applicants should send the following documents (PDF format):

L’Associazione Italiana di Scienze Regionali (A.I.S.Re) annuncia la sua XLI Conferenza Scientifica Annuale, incontro che accoglie i contributi di studiosi provenienti da diverse discipline afferenti all’ambito delle scienze regionali. I temi centrali della XLI Conferenza saranno l’analisi e l’interpretazione dell’impatto che le più recenti innovazioni tecnologiche – con particolare riferimento alla rivoluzione 4.0 - hanno avuto e avranno nell’immediato futuro sui sistemi territoriali con specializzazione produttive nei settori tradizionali dell’economia, da quelli manifatturieri a quelli turistici, così come le policy che si possono adottare a livello territoriale per fare di queste innovazioni un driver di sviluppo. La nuova rivoluzione tecnologica impone infatti grandi trasformazioni nella società, negli stili di vita e, non ultimo, nei modi di produzione. Infatti, la rivoluzione digitale è diventata un processo pervasivo e dirompente, che coinvolge i processi produttivi delle imprese, a prescindere dalla loro caratterizzazione dimensionale o dagli indirizzi produttivi, generando nuovi modi di creare valore aggiunto. Tutto questo permette a settori tradizionali, nessuno escluso, di trovare nuove possibilità di rilancio. La capacità di affrontare la rivoluzione tecnologica in atto, di cogliere i grandi vantaggi che questa genera e, al tempo stesso, di limitarne i costi, è il punto di svolta per dare la possibilità anche ad aree in ritardo di sviluppo di valorizzare le proprie tradizioni produttive, facendone attraverso l’innovazione tecnologica volano di sviluppo dei propri sistemi economici. Inoltre, ciò permette di formulare scenari di crescita e proposte di patrimonializzazione (economica, sociale, ambientale) capaci di dare centralità al genius loci. Comprendere i fattori che influenzano la capacità di un territorio di reagire, e pro-agire, alla trasformazione socio-economica che le nuove tecnologie generano è una delle questioni più rilevanti su cui le scienze regionali sono chiamate a riflettere. Poco ancora è stato detto a riguardo, e la conferenza rappresenta un modo di avviare considerazioni in merito all’identificazione dei fattori che permettono una trasformazione strutturale dei territori senza perderne le connotazioni distintive e qualificanti (resilienza territoriale), nonché le politiche e le strutture di governance che possano meglio avviare e/o facilitare il cambiamento.

Al di là del tema principale, la conferenza A.I.S.Re si presenta come luogo di dibattito sui principali temi delle Scienze Regionali. L’A.I.S.Re pertanto invita gli interessati a presentare lavori scientifici originali riguardanti le seguenti tematiche:

A. Governance, politiche pubbliche regionali e territoriali, programmazione europea;
B. Crescita e disparità regionali;
C. Globalizzazione, catene del valore e sistemi produttivi locali;

MODALITÀ DI PARTECIPAZIONE

Sono previste due modalità di partecipazione alla Conferenza:
• Con sessioni organizzate. È possibile proporsi come organizzatore di sessione. La scadenza per comunicare alla Segreteria (segreteria.tecnica@aisre.it) il nominativo del responsabile scientifico organizzativo, il titolo della sessione e il numero indicativo di relazioni previste (5 per ciascuna sessione) è il 31 gennaio 2020.
• Con singoli contributi o poster. Gli interessati devono inviare un abstract entro il 15 marzo 2020. La presentazione di un poster segue la medesima procedura prevista per i contributi. In questo caso, nell’abstract va specificato nel titolo “modalità poster”. La scadenza per l’invio è anche in questo caso il 5 marzo 2020. SESSION ABSTRACT
In recent years, public investments in Europe have been concentrated especially in big metropolitan areas focusing on the construction of high-speed train lines and fast connections, improvement of flight connections and big events nourishing dynamics that make those territories even stronger. As counterparts, other territories emerged as marginal, remote, depopulated and low-infrastructure. We will define them: fragile territories. In Italy, due to historical, morphological and orographic conditions, this process is particularly visible: "fragile territories" in Italy are abandoned territories all along the Appennine, the South and the Islands, rural areas, but also the periphery of the big metropolitan areas that suffer low services and accessibility conditions. These territories experience today processes of demographic change, resources scarcity, loss of the existing social fixed capital (public facilities, sports, cultural and health centres, schools, public parks, and playgrounds, social housing) and infrastructures (streets, railways, water systems, digital network), social inequalities, migration and depopulation because of lack of local resources. Strategies are required to respond to new social, economic and environmental needs.
This session welcome proposal on: understanding the role of these territories in the frame of national strategies of development; presenting instruments and methodologies needed to describe those areas and their characteristics; introducing examples of projects and practices, in Italy and Europe, that, may help to develop non-sectorial and multi-scalar strategies for empowering those territories and dealing with territorial vulnerabilities, with particular reference to the concept of shrinking, welfare and accessibility.

After the success of the first edition, the Department of Architecture and Urban Studies of the Polytechnic of Milan, in collaboration with the Poliedra Consortium organizes the second edition of Master in Design for Development. Architecture, Urban Planning and Heritage in the Global South, directed by Prof. Camillo Magni.

The impacts of globalisation on cities and regions are creating huge socio-spatial imbalances, environmental emergencies and complex urban management problems, particularly in the regions of the Global South and in countries with emerging economies. Operating in these places requires innovative professional skills to be expressly developed to be able to face the challenges of inclusive, sustainable urban development.

The Master’s in Design for Development has been devised to meet these demands in the firm belief that the design disciplines can play a leading role in these new urbanisation processes. Indeed, there is ever growing demand from all sides for design experts capable of navigating the challenging contexts of the Global South by bringing skills and expertise that focus on the governability and quality of urban and regional development.

With this in mind, the programme of this First and Second Level Specialising Master’s Course sets out to train professionals with an international outlook capable of tackling the most difficult challenges posed by contemporary urban development with skill and creativity, based on an approach that blends research, design and innovation. These new professionals will be offered a broad overview of design at a variety of scales, in which architecture, planning and heritage protection are all aspects of the same approach to design which aims to develop effective strategies for defending and developing the regions in which they operate in environmental and social terms.

The aim is to produce professionals/consultants in the area of development-related spatial issues who can seek employment at the supranational, national or local scale, whether in the public, private or third sector.

Contributions will be selected through consideration of abstracts. Authors who are selected will be then required to submit a full paper to be included in the Conference publications.

Please note that the selected contributions could be presented as posters during the Conference.

ABSTRACT REQUIREMENTS
• Abstracts for consideration (2000 characters maximum, including spaces), must be submitted in English, which is the language of the Conference, and formatted in an editable version (.docx);
• The first line of the heading must indicate which of the 3 thematic session and sub-topic the abstract refers to and 3 keywords;
• The heading must include the title of the work, name of the author or authors, qualification, affiliation or institution they represent (if necessary), e-mail address;
• Authors should also submit a CV of no more than 1500 characters (including spaces);
• Abstract and CV must be sent to info@uniscape.eu by the 28 February 2020;

PAPER REQUIREMENTS
• Selected authors are expected to submit a full paper (12000 characters maximum, including spaces), in English;
• The first page must include the title of the paper, name of author or authors, affiliation or institution they represent (if necessary) and e-mail address;
• Up to 10 images may be included, 150 dpi, jpg;
• Do not include any extra formats, such as logos or borders;
• Authors having received the notification of acceptance must provide the full paper by 10 June 2020.

Please note that Even if an abstract is accepted, the full paper will not be published if it does not meet the requirements (deadline, format, length, etc.).

Politecnico di Milano, 17-18 febbraio 2020

Raccogliendo la sfida delle 15 Proposte per la Giustizia Sociale avanzate dal Forum Disuguaglianze Diversità e nell’ambito delle attività del suo programma d’Eccellenza sulle Fragilità Territoriali, il Dipartimento di Architettura e Studi Urbani del Politecnico di Milano promuove un percorso di riflessione sui divari sociali, territoriali e ambientali e su quali strategie, politiche e progetti siano oggi necessari per affrontarli. Il primo passo di questo percorso sarà un seminario di due giornate di lavoro durante le quali diversi gruppi di ricercatrici e ricercatori discuteranno del come affrontare le geografie e le dimensioni dei divari attraverso politiche relative ad alcuni temi essenziali della riflessione urbanistica e urbana: l’abitare, il welfare, le reti ambientali e della mobilità. Le indicazioni e le proposte discusse nelle due giornate confluiranno in una prima agenda che si propone di mappare quello che sappiamo, di esplorare quello che ancora non sappiamo e di individuare quali debbano essere gli assi principali di una azione coordinata che punti a combattere le disuguaglianze spaziali e territoriali nel nostro paese.

CARATTERISTICHE E FINALITA' DEL PREMIO
L’archivio Osvaldo Piacentini, con il patrocinio di Regione Emilia Romagna, Comune di Reggio Emilia e Provincia di Reggio Emilia, intende offrire un contributo di riflessione e proposta su questioni cruciali attinenti le politiche del territorio considerato nelle sue diverse dimensioni (fisica, istituzionale, sociale, ambientale, economica, culturale ed altre ancora). Alla pluralità di dimensioni del territorio corrisponde una pluralità di apporti disciplinari approfonditi ma anche, e soprattutto, capaci di dialogare e di ibridarsi per affrontare efficacemente problemi di natura multidisciplinare. E’ questo il tratto distintivo e non congiunturale da sottolineare nella circostanza, in quanto portare al confronto diverse culture disciplinari e punti di osservazione plurali è una peculiarità della vicenda professionale e umana di Ugo Baldini. Organizzare iniziative di questo tipo, peraltro, fa parte fin dall’inizio della missione e dei compiti dell’Archivio Piacentini e ha dato vita a incontri, giornate di studio, seminari oltre al confronto di idee che ha connotato tutti i numeri del Notiziario. Con l’istituzione del Premio Ugo Baldini l’Archivio Piacentini intende promuovere la ricerca accademica valorizzando le competenze disciplinari e soprattutto la capacità di integrare tali competenze espressa da tesi di dottorato di ricerca. Le tesi ammesse alla selezione dovranno affrontare da diversi punti di vista disciplinari - dell’architettura e dell’urbanistica ma anche del design, delle discipline economiche, sociali e giuridiche, della cultura geografica, delle discipline agronomiche e di quelle ambientali - tre temi.

1. Territorio delle emergenze
2. Territorio delle strategie
3. Territorio della vita quotidiana

IL PREMIO
Il premio consiste nella pubblicazione presso la casa editrice Il Mulino di una tesi di dottorato che dia un contributo significativo su uno dei tre temi indicati: Territorio delle emergenze, Territorio delle strategie e Territorio della vita quotidiana.
La Giuria potrà richiedere agli autori un lavoro redazionale per passare dalla tesi alla pubblicazione; l’esecuzione di questo lavoro redazionale è condizione necessaria per la pubblicazione.
La Giuria potrà sia optare per un volume collettivo in cui vengano pubblicate più di una tesi ritenute meritevoli sia non assegnare il premio nel caso in cui non ritenga meritevole di pubblicazione nessuna delle tesi presentate.

MODALITA' DI PARTECIPAZIONE
Sono ammesse a partecipare le tesi di dottorato discusse negli anni 2017, 2018 e 2019.

GIURIA E PROCESSO DI VALUTAZIONE
La Giuria sarà coordinata senza diritto di voto dal Presidente dell’Archivio Osvaldo Piacentini e composta da tre eminenti studiosi:
• Angela Barbanente, urbanista
• Claudio Greppi, geografo
• Flaviano Zandonai, sociologo

Il processo di valutazione comprenderà:
• una prima selezione sulla base di abstract esaminati dal Consiglio di Presidenza dell’Archivio Osvaldo Piacentini;
• la scelta definitiva effettuata dalla Giuria.

Rhegion United Nations 2020-2030: Territories And Cities, Material And Immaterial Heritage, Resilience And Transformation in the Perspective of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals to Change the World and Rhegion: United Nations 2020-2030 International Workshop/Competition, events of the Mediterranea University of Reggio Calabria, intend to propose Reggio Calabria as a cultural, scientific and operational reference, on a large scale, for the subjects covered by the UN 2020 - 2030 Agenda.

They are promoted by the Mediterranea University of Reggio Calabria, Department Heritage, Architecture, Urban Planning – PAU, the International Ph.D. Programme in Architecture of the Mediterranea University of Reggio Calabria, with the participation of New Metropolitan Perspectives and TREnD Project, with the patronage of Ministry of the Environment and Protection of the Territory and the Sea – MATTM, National Union of Municipalities and Community of Mountain Authorities – UNCEM, Regional Science Association International – RSAI, International Society of City and Regional Planners – ISOCARP, National Institute of Urban Planning – INU, Society of Italian Townplanners – SIU, Society of Territorialists – SdT, Italian Regional Science Association – AISRe, Legambiente, Italian Alliance for Sustainable Development – ASviS, National Council of Engineers – CNI, National Council of Architects, Planners, Landscapers, Conservationists – CNAPPC, National Institute of Bio-architecture – INBAr, Dwelling on Earth – Abitare La Terra, Research Center for the Aesthetics of Law – CRED, European Higher Institute of Political Studies – ISESP, Research Team for Mediterranean Entrepreneurship and Startups – RETMES, Order of Architects, Planners, Landscapers, Conservationists of Reggio Calabria Province, Confindustria Reggio Calabria, Touring Club Reggio Calabria.

Chair: Department of Law, Economics and Human Sciences

Each session will be managed by a department of the University, having incorporated the two Engineering departments. A further session can be created.

Rhegion is a partner of New Metropolitan Perspectives Simposium, so the Call follows its procedure for registration, paper upload, double peer review, specifying that the paper is for "Rhegion" and making a choice of priority among the 5 thematic areas. Accepted papers will be published in Smart Innovation, System and Technologies (2190-3018) by SPRINGER. The books of this series are submitted to SCOPUS, EI-Compendex, and Springerlink.

Planum. The Journal of Urbanism is a media partner for the Rhegion events.

CONFERENCE DRAFT PROGRAMME

The Italian Ministry of the Environment for the protection of the territory and the sea will open the Program.
For the United Nations, the keynote speaker will be Vincent Kitio, Arch, PhD. | Chief, Urban Energy Unit | Urban Basic Services Branch | United Nations Human Settlements Program, UN-Habitat, Nairobi, Kenya. He will also deal with SDG7 and SDG11 objectives as witness of Nigeria, one of the international cases.
For the United States, prof. Mark Catridge - President of the International Regional Science Association, Swank Chair in Rural-Urban Policy/Prof., AED Economics, The Ohio State University, Adjunct Professor, School of Economics, Jinan Univ. Guangzhou, China, Social Sciences Dept., Gran Sasso Science Institute, L'Aquila, Italy, Coordinating Editor Springer Briefs in Regional Science.
Witness for China is Wang Xin - Doctor, Vice Dean, Associate Professor - TONGJI Institute of Environment for Sustainable Development, (IESD), MOE Joint Lab for International Cooperation on Eco-Urban Design, College of Architecture and Urban Planning, Tongji University, Shanghai.
Andrè Torre, President of the European Regional Science Association - ERSA, professor at UMR SAD-APT Agro Paristech, will discuss the European policies.
Emeritus prof. Federico Butera of the Polytechnic of Milano will participate.
Legambiente, the National Union of Municipalities and Community of Mountain Authorities, the National Institute of Urban Planning, the Society of Territorialists, the National Council of Engineers, and the National Council of Architects, Planners, Landscapers, Conservationists have already confirmed their presence and We are waiting for others like the International Society of City and Regional Planners and the Italian Regional Science Association.

The two days of Rhegion Event, May 25 -26 and the Workshop, June 1-5, will probably be included among the events of the Sustainable Development Festival promoted by ASviS - of which there is the patronage and participation - that takes place from May 20 to June 5, 2020, throughout Italy.
We are awaiting confirmation of Jeremy Rifkin. It is possible that the urban sociologist Saskia Sassen will also participate.
A few months before the Event, a phase of diffusion in the city schools of the topics covered is foreseen.
Furthermore, the recognition of CFU for students will be required and, with the involvement of professional associations, of professional ones.

REGISTRATION FOR THE INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP / COMPETITION
Rhegion: United Nations 2020

The Workshop aims is an opportunity to experiment, with the design practice, the theories of recovery and redevelopment, in the territorial context of the Metropolitan Area of Reggio Calabria, and to identify guidelines for sustainable territorial governance, considering the strong environmental value, the rich historical testimonies and therefore the significant tourist potential of the area.
