PROGRAMME
The International PhD Summer School is open to about 30 PhD Students from Politecnico di Milano, and other Italian and foreign PhD Programmes interested in participating to this initiative. The School proposes an activity related to curricular PhD Courses corresponding to 5 ECTS credits. It is organized in a design workshop and a series of thematic conferences in which different disciplinary contributions will be considered and useful for the development of research methodologies, with lecturers, designers and scholars of international relevance. The design experiments will be developed in Mantua urban context and will be conducted by design groups supervised by tutors and visiting professors. The design activity will be verified during an intermediate and a final review by boards consisting of professors of the Politecnico di Milano and other Universities.

TOPIC
The “Heritage and Design” International PhD Summer School proposes different disciplinary approaches for the development of intervention strategies applied to the historical city, to its morphological fabric, to its places and monumental buildings. The School aims to open the way for new research methodologies focused on the relationship between architectural and landscape pre-existing conditions in historically layered environments, and design actions of urban recomposition and renewal. The considerations about the insertion of new urban functions or architectural structures in the study areas will address concretely the relationships among conservation, adaptation, transformation of places in order to enhance the built heritage. The case-studies will be chosen in collaboration with Mantua Municipality, and will be focused on some emblematic contexts of historical and modern transformations in the city. They will be centered on three different themes and scales: “architectural recovery and urban reorganization”, “recomposition of open spaces”, “landscape design”.
